Tourists visiting Gibraltar next month will have the chance to view a new film about Maria Callas. Screened by Gibraltar Cultural Services (GCS) and produced by filmmaker Nina Danino, “Maria” focuses on the life and last days of the American-Greek soprano singer.
According to GCS, the film image is transfigured in an audio-visual “Iconostasis” (wall of icons) of different archive formats and newly-shot footage.
Gibraltar-born Nina Danino studied fine art in London in the 1970s and 1980s. Her films have been shown worldwide in festivals including Edinburgh and London, while her interests centre on experimental languages of film.
“Maria” is her fifth feature length film and a sister film to “Solitude”, which was launched in 2022. “Together,” explains GCS, “the two films form a diptych about powerful iconic women. The productions illustrate Nina Danino’s long-term artistic practice exploring the voice, experimental film, jouissance and religious iconography.”
The film will be screened at Ince’s Hall on 18 April. Those interested in attending can obtain more details by emailing: development@culture.gov.gi. A trailer is available for viewing here.
